Charnwood Borough Council has announced a new regeneration scheme covering Bedford Square, Ward’s End and Devonshire Square, which aims to increase footfall to boost trade in Loughborough town centre.
The project would see footpaths widened and re-paved to create a high-quality and attractive street scene which will showcase the area’s distinct character and heritage. Character street lighting and furniture would also be added and more of the area would be on one level making it more accessible.
A large open space in Devonshire Square would be created to host events and the scheme also retains parking and maintains traffic flow in the area.
The scheme is supported by a £183,000 allocation from the Pooled Business Rates Fund, managed by the LLEP on behalf of the local authorities and district councils.

“It is imperative that we invest in our town centres to support local economies and enhance them as attractive places to visit.
For some time traditional high streets have faced challenges to their long term viability and are competing with the growth of online sales. The LLEP has made a £183,000 investment towards the regeneration of Loughborough town centre as recently commissioned studies demonstrate the need to reimagine town centres. This includes improvements to public realms and attracting inward investment, leisure and housing opportunities supported by an active programme of activities, events and promotions to develop an experiential offer to attract and retain footfall.”
The Council hopes work, which will be phased, can start early in 2021 and be completed by October 2021.
