We all know that the Covid-19 pandemic has had a marked impact on business and economic activity. As we move towards an easing of restrictions, there are still many questions hanging over industry, and there is still uncertainty as to the extent to which some will be affected. What is certain is that there will be a prolonged resetting of both the national and our local economy, and that many businesses will require support and innovative economic strategies to help them through these unprecedented times.
These profiles are therefore more important than ever, as they provide a snapshot of how the whole economy here in Leicester and Leicestershire is performing right now. Hinckley and Bosworth’s profile shows that the professional, scientific and technical sectors have an 8.9% share of total employment in the district. This is up from 6.2% 2011. Transport and storage grew from 4.4% to 6.7% in the same period. However, business administration and support services; finance and insurance; and ICT sectors all saw falls in employment.
Crucially, our profiles demonstrate the level of support required by specific industry sectors, and by the local working-age population. They show, for example, the most common job postings in each district and in the region as a whole, so that we can discern which sectors are most in need of staffing. They also show rates of economic inactivity in each district, and compare this to the whole of Leicester and Leicestershire and the wider country. This information is vital to ascertain the levels of employment support needed in the area, and can help businesses more efficiently target job postings should they need to recruit.
