Jhorvis Tyrell, 24, from Leicester was celebrated at a star-studded virtual awards ceremony after overcoming long term unemployment and the challenges exacerbated by his disability and personal loss to find his feet and turn his life around.
He won the prestigious Delta Air Lines Rising Star Award, recognising young people who have overcome barriers and are in sustainable employment, at the ceremony hosted by Ant and Dec, which also featured appearances by celebrities including Dame Helen Mirren, Idris Elba, Alesha Dixon, Anne-Marie, Holly Willoughby, and Philip Schofield.
The Prince’s Trust and TK Maxx & Homesense Awards recognise young people who have turned their life around, succeeded against the odds, and had a positive impact on their local community.
Congratulating the young people on their well-deserved awards, this year’s winners received a very special video message from Founder and President of The Prince’s Trust, HRH The Prince of Wales.
In the pre-recorded video message, Founder and President of The Prince’s Trust, HRH The Prince of Wales said: “I would like to send my most heartfelt congratulations to all of this year’s award winners, each of you has inspired us with your determination, your incredible spirit and your commitment to working towards a truly positive future.”
Before coming to The Prince’s Trust, Jhorvis had been out of work for four years. Challenged with a learning disability and visual impairment, he struggled to find employment but knew that with the right support he could still make something of himself. Jhorvis joined The Prince’s Trust Get Started with Football programme in 2017, securing a job with a logistics company soon after but was sadly made redundant after 15 months.
Following the tragic passing of both his father, and grandfather soon after in 2019, Jhorvis’ mum contacted The Trust to see if they could support him during this incredibly difficult time. With their support once again, Jhorvis went on to enroll in The Prince’s Trust Get Into Logistics with M&S programme. Through all his hard work, he successfully secured a job with them on completion has been working full-time for M&S ever since.
After being presented with the Delta Air Lines Rising Star Award, Jhorvis said:
“I was so surprised when I realised I had won this award – it means a lot to me. My mum is really proud of what I’ve achieved too. It’s thanks to the support I’ve had from The Prince’s Trust and colleagues at Marks and Spencer that my confidence has grown and I feel like I can plan for my future. I can’t help smiling to myself. It’s a great feeling.”

Youth charity The Prince’s Trust helps young people aged 11 to 30 who are unemployed or struggling in their education to transform their lives by supporting them to realise their potential.
The Trust’s practical courses, together with the assistance of its youth support workers and mentors, equip young people with the confidence and skills they need to move into work, training and education.
TK Maxx and Homesense have been a partner of The Prince’s Trust since 2013 and are one of The Trust’s largest delivery partners of the Get into Retail programme. This is a two-to-six-week course that develops young people’s skills in the retail sector and supports them into positive outcomes in retail. Since the partnership began, over 70% of young people who have taken the course went on to full time employment at TK Maxx or Homesense.
